As a singer and guitarist, I'd like to know what your take is on how a solo guitarist should arrange a Jazz standard to accomodate the right chord selection for singing and then chord soloing. I assume it is a combination of comping and chord melody, but I'd like to see a lesson where you could teach a song walkng us through those steps. Totally loving your lessons! Would love to see a chord melody of "Stardust" someday. Thanks! Eddie V.
First you have to set up the tonality so the singer can easily hear the beginning notes with your intro. Once they have the melody you can ease up on the chording and play some bass lines and even jazz lines and play sparsely. Although with each shift of the tonal centers again you have to set it up so there's no question of the note. Having the melody in your fingers is a big help to maneuver through a tune and set up those tonal centers.
